ElizaDoole
Professional writer and creative author.
Freelance writing is an ambition; a dream; a calling. I always wrote in every job I held, and got marshalled to do the public relations work, the marketing copy, VIP events, the office displays and handling media enquiries.
Wondering why I wasn't writing for a living, I would sit there doodling away every spare minute writing titles for great novels, then go home and commence writing. Articles for my parish magazine; competitions; letters to the editor; parliamentary committee letters; long funny tomes to absent friends; poetry; short stories; plus the three novels I now have boiling away.
The advice that a good writer writes every day is somewhat lost on me. I have to write every day or I feel lost. How I write can vary. Sometimes it is like shouting to the rooftops; "PEOPLE HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THIS!" Other times poetry calls me to get down how I feel universally about topics as varied as the ocean, stag do's, the House of Lords or loving my man.
As you can imagine, the advice to write in a niche is also somewhat lost on me. I feel that there is a big difference between being a writer, and being a journalist, and I also feel these differences are artificial and bad. I think that asking a writer to specialise is like asking a rainbow to choose one colour.
That doesn't mean I don't produce for corporate persons. I do, and often. As a trained journalist and a trained teacher I am blessed with structure, creativity, media savvy and strong opinions! I am available to hire on Elance and there is more about "Eliza Doole the professional writer" on there.
Over the years the gorgeous teenagers I've taught from all walks of life gave me the courage to pursue my dreams. I am very grateful to younger people for their bold visions, and the courage they demonstrate every day when they express themselves strongly.
I recommend to new writers who want to try freelance to concentrate on two platforms at the most. If you are a generalist you will need to build a reputation.
It is important to get those brochures, technical writing tasks, travel articles, ghostwritten novels and brand copy right for every single client. What you need to understand as a generalist freelancer is that you love the variety and thrive on learning new things. BUT you still need to build a portfolio to get repeat clients and more pay for your work.
The corporate work is what allows me the freedom to write my own stuff. Hubpages has been a real blessing to me. It is a wonderful platform to learn how to get amazing thoughts, and your unique self out there to the readers. It is a supportive community and there are brilliant writers to learn from, alongside great SEO/SMO experts. It is a chance to work with technical people if you are a creative authopreneur.
